Driving Side

Vehicles must be driven on the right-hand side of the road.

Seat Belts

Wearing seat belts is compulsory for all occupants of the vehicle. Failing to comply may result in fines.

  • Urban areas: 50 km/h (31 mph)
  • Non-urban roads: 90 km/h (56 mph)
  • Dual carriageways (strade extraurbane principali): 110 km/h (68 mph)
  • Motorways (autostrade): 130 km/h (81 mph)

Drinking and Driving

The maximum legal blood alcohol concentration is 0.5 grams per litre. However, for drivers with less than three years of experience, the limit is set at zero.

Mobile Phones

Using a mobile phone while driving is illegal unless using a hands-free device.

Children in Cars

Children under 150 cm in height must be secured in an appropriate child safety restraint system.

Motorways (Autostrade)

  • Tolls: Most motorways are toll-based, and payment can be made using cash, credit cards, or prepaid toll cards.
  • Service Areas: Service stations (Aree di Servizio) are located frequently, offering fuel, food, and restroom facilities.
  • Overtaking: The left lane is for overtaking, and drivers should return to the right lane after passing.
